Exercise in Redundancies & Tautologies

It is a true fact that there are a seven days until the next class, so in that time period while in the safe haven of your home and hearth and while you are reading and not seeing the sights I would like you, during that time period, to collect two pleonasms and then load them as comment to this blog assignment.

2) "He contracted the HIV virus." HIV is an acronym for human immunodeficiency virus, so the words "the" and "virus" are not needed.

Advertising is by far the costliest element of presidential campaigning, and the combined total of advertising in this election cycle is expected to reach close to $3 billion, $1 billion more than was spent in the 2004 presidential campaign.

Should Convicted Felons Have Voting Rights?
As federal and state prison populations continue to swell and the 2000 elections are fast approaching, the issue of voting rights for convicted felons has gained increasing attention from candidates and the media. With the exceptions of Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts, the remaining 46 states and the District of Columbia prohibit inmates serving felony convictions from voting in any public elections. While a majority of states restore voting rights to convicted felons after they complete their prison terms or probation periods, at least ten states, including Virginia, Delaware and New Mexico permanently prohibit former felons from voting.

a FELON is a person who has been convicted of a felony. They must be convicted in order to be one, therefore CONVICTED FELON is incorrect.

Clinton Township police are seeking information about an ATM machine theft at 3:20 a.m. today from the Citgo gas station on Harper near 14 Mile.
The thieves are also believed to be responsible for a similar incident an hour later at Moross and Mack in Detroit, where another ATM machine was snatched from a Walgreen store, Maierle said.

1. Violent brawl:

A man who died in November after he was shocked with a Taser stun gun during a violent brawl with officers died because of his cocaine use, not the weapon, Miami-Dade police said Thursday.

(I've never heard of a gentle brawl)

2. Key point:

Representatives of American colleges and universities and the U.S. Department of Education moved toward agreement on Thursday on several key points of a new grant program for aspiring teachers but suspected some issues couldn't be resolved without intervention by Congress.

(If someone makes a point, doesn't that make it "key"?)

1)For the first time, New York City residents will be able to vote by "puffing" and "sipping" air through a straw, pumping a foot pedal, touching a computer screen or pressing flat plastic shapes — two triangles, a circle and a square — affixed to the four corners of a specially configured keyboard.
-NY Times

"Pedal" is defined as a foot-operated lever, so it's redundant.

2)But the perception that Mr. Eskew has actively worked to besmirch a fellow classmate has upset at least some fellow members of the class of 1972, which had about 325 students.

1. "social stigma"... from a Post-Secret post this week.
I think that by definition a stigma is socially given, you can't have a stigma that isn't social. You don't need that word.

2. "divisive issue"... from an article about the California governor's health care plans and voting going on Monday. If it is an issue it is probably divisive, controversial, debatable... the word isn't needed.

-From the Miami Herald http://www.miamiherald.com/1057/story/387511.html

We all know that the word "children" already means people that are young in age. Therefore, the word "young" can be deleted.

2)"As for Hilda, she wants seniors to know there's a dangerous downside to sex in their golden years."

-The Miami Heraldhttp://www.miamiherald.com/news/americas/story/396101.html

…Such attacks have not led to a mass exodus from Iran, because the majority of Iranians are hospitable to the Jews and most Jews in Iran are economically comfortable, Javedanfar said.

1)In describing his contingency plan to The A.P., he also made no mention of possibly shooting down the satellite before it began its final descent.

Isn't a descent final in this case? After all, this is about the satellite that will crash on Earth, which means it is not coming back up.

2)"There is a chance, Mr. President, in the next 357 days, to get real results and give the American people renewed optimism that their challenges are the top priority," Ms. Sebelius said.

Isn't a priority top? There is no other type of priority.
Webster's defines priority as: "the right to precede others in order, rank, privilege, etc.; precedence." Which means that if the challenges are priority, they are already on top.
